Bearcats Hang Tough With Two-Time Defending State Champs, But In The End, Piedmont's Depth, Offensive Firepower Just Too Much

In front of a massive crowd on both sides of Bill Bryan Stadium, The #2 ranked and defending two-time 3A state champion Piedmont Bulldogs cleared the next to last challenge to another Class 3A Region 5 championship on FNN Friday night when they put away Weaver 33-27.  But it wasn't easy!

After the game, Piedmont's Steve Smith said, "Weaver has some talented guys, and they played really hard tonight. They made plays, and we didn’t tackle very well. We're lucky to get out of here with a win.  I’m tickled to get it, but we’re going to have to play better than that.”

Piedmont QB Cardavion Myers put up more than half of Piedmont’s total offense, over 400 yards of it, Myers rushed for 209 yards and three TDs and passed for 62 yards and another score.

Weaver was gutsy and impressive in their bid to knock off the Bulldogs.  QB Dalton Hamby completed 10 of 15 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns.  The son of Weaver's Coach Daryl Hamby also ran for 93 yards on 11 carries.

The Bulldogs struck first on a 37-yard fourth-and-long pass from Myers to Darien Bossie in the first quarter.

Weaver (4-2, 1-2) answered on the first play of the second quarter when Hamby found receiver Robert Gaines with plenty of room to run, sprinting for a 72-yard touchdown.

In hindsight, possible the determining point in the game came when Weaver took its last drive before halftime inside the Bulldog 10, but coming up empty on points when Myers intercepted Hamby in the end zone.

Hamby threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Spinks, but the Bulldogs pushed their lead back to two touchdowns on a 6-yard Myers run.

Piedmont returns home this week to face Wellborn while Weaver travels to Glencoe.  The Bulldogs only need a win over Ohatchee in two weeks to lock up 3A-Region 5 while Weaver is likely to finish 4th unless they can upset Randolph County on the road.
